Future...

Many traditional working breeds are threatened by the changes brought about by urbanization and technology. Historically, English shepherds were preserved by farmers breeding working dogs. As small farms disappear, and the all-purpose farm shepherd is replaced by several "specialist" dogs (perhaps one to herd, one to guard, one to hunt), English shepherds are becoming ever harder to find.

There is an additional challenge to the integrity of these working dogs: the growing number of breeders influenced by the "dog fancy" or show ring mentality. English shepherds have first and foremost been working dogs, with a moderate "natural" form, practical coat, keen mind and bold spirit. All of these essentials are in danger if "looks" are singled out as an indicator of quality, and breeders rewarded for producing dogs that can't work.
