English Shepherds have been blessed with owners and breeders whose primary concern is function not flash. They continue to exhibit the herding and guardian abilities for which they were originally bred, and have a build and coat that is suited to a working life. The same cannot be said of many breeds, which have unfortunately been "fancied up" for the show ring or "mellowed out" for pet homes, making the English Shepherd a rare dog in quality as well as numbers.
